VOLK­SWA­GEN has fi­nally con­firmed the ru­mours that it will pull its works team from the na­tional rally cham­pi­onship.

In a state­ment re­leased af­ter the Polok­wane Rally on Sun­day, Volk­swa­gen’s Mo­tor­sport head Mike Rowe said: “Volk­swa­gen Mo­tor­sport will, in fu­ture, fo­cus on sup­port­ing pri­va­teer teams and the Na­tional Rally Com­mis­sion as a tech­ni­cal part­ner.

“Volk­swa­gen will also spon­sor the 2016 Volk­swa­gen Rally and sup­port for cir­cuit rac­ing will con­tinue, in­clud­ing an en­try in the new GTC for­mula mooted for 2016.

“The Volk­swa­gen Mo­tor­sport team, the driv­ers, nav­i­ga­tors and all our spon­sors, es­pe­cially Esteq, have earned our thanks for their sup­port, ded­i­ca­tion and hard work over the years.”

He added that VW hopes to en­joy fu­ture partnerships with Sa­sol.

There is no news yet if any of the VW driv­ing pairs, Henk Late­gan and Barry White, Gugu Zulu and Hil­ton Auf­fray, and Her­gen Fekken and Pierre Ar­ries, will race as pri­va­teers. — WR.
