Aaron Baker (above) in the U.S. has a lot in com­mon with Jarod Black­man in Hil­ton (right). Both were cham­pion mo­tocross rid­ers who were paral­ysed in train­ing, both set their minds on a com­mon goal — to get mo­bile again — and both now help other quadriplegics and am­putees to get through the de­spair and into the light at their spe­cialised gyms. While Black­man races a 1000 cc two-seater quad bike with co-driver Matthew English in SA’s cross coun­try cham­pi­onships, Baker built a trike on 26x4,6 inch snow tyres to take on moun­tain trails. His stunts on the trike eas­ily top a five-day walk he did on canes through the Mo­jave desert last year to in­spire peo­ple who are told they will never walk again. Black­man is first to point out that such a jour­ney to re­cov­ery takes a long time and is mostly in the mind, but it is a jour­ney he has made and can help oth­ers to nav­i­gate.
