Arrests imminent for murder of elderly woman
POLICE said arrests for the murder of an elderly Pietermaritzburg woman were imminent after she was found in a pool of blood at her home on Saturday.
Pietermaritzburg spokesperson Warrant Officer Joshua Maistry said yesterday that police rushed to the woman’s home on Chota Motala Road near New Home Furnishers on Saturday morning after receiving a report of murder.
At the house, police found 80-yearold Premawathie Hamdhin lying on a bed with pools of blood drowning the sheets around her waist area.
Maistry said according to a statement by Hamdhin’s grandson to the police, he went to visit his grandmother but found the doors locked with no response from inside the house.
After forcing open the door, the grandson found Hamdhin’s body in her bedroom.
Maistry said paramedics declared Hamdhin dead at her home and police were awaiting a post-mortem report to determine the cause of her death.
“At this stage, nobody has been arrested as yet, however arrests of the suspects are imminent,” Maistry said.
