Beast has ‘huge respect’ for new scrum consultant

SPRINGBOK prop Tendai “Beast” Mtawarira is excited at the prospect of working with new scrum consultant Matt Proudfoot.

Proudfoot worked with Allister Coetzee at the Stormers before following him to Japan to be an assistant at the Kobe Steel Kobelco Steelers, and now the pair are reunited once more.

Coetzee had not been Bok coach long before he had made his intentions clear to bring Proudfoot on board.

Mtawarira is the most experienced Springbok in the 31-man squad preparing for three Tests against Ireland this month. “I’ve found him to be very positive,” Mtawarira said.

“He comes with a wealth of experience and he’s done very well in the past with the Stormers.”

Beast recalls meeting Proudfoot on numerous occasions when the Sharks met the Stormers in Super Rugby.

“I always had huge respect for him. I think every time we played against the Stormers I would always try and ask him a question or two and see the way he thinks,” Mtawarira said.

“I think having him here is going to bring a new dimension to our scrummaging. We’re just going to get better and better. We’ll have to work very hard but I think he’s going to bring a lot of value,” he added.

The first Test takes place on June 11 in Cape Town. — Sport24.
