Fat electric scooter
FROM China comes the MAD, an Italian-styled scooter on fat wheels that offers five individual motor options between 500 and 1 600 watts, along with lead-acid and lithium-ion battery options.
The fat scooters’ range is between 30 and 40 km, with the 48 V/12 Ah lead-acid battery. The lithium option adds about 16 km to the lead battery’s range, not a lot considering the extra outlay.
Top speed is 45 km/h with the 1 300- and 1 600-watt motors.
Its Italian designers say the MAD is a versatile commuter for the right type of rider. It includes a removable seat and folding handlebars to meet various riding, transport and storage needs, and accessories like the double headlight and handlebar and saddle bags increase its versatility.
The MAD hit the market in Italy in December 2015. Manufacturing is handled by China’s Maiway Industry Co, Ltd, and prices start at €1 000 (about R17 000).
