New As­tra marks quar­ter-mil­lion sales world­wide

THE euro-rand ex­change rate is do­ing the new As­tra no favours in South Africa, where the ex­cel­lent ve­hi­cle saw only 32 sales dur­ing Au­gust.

World­wide, the pic­ture is to­tally dif­fer­ent. Opel said over 250 000 new As­tra mod­els have to date been sold to dis­cern­ing petrol­heads.

Opel CEO Dr Karl-Thomas Neu­mann said: “We promised a big hit in the com­pact class — and we kept our prom­ise.

“With a host of in­no­va­tions oth­er­wise rarely found in this seg­ment, the youngest gen­er­a­tion of the As­tra and As­tra Sports Tourer is again a best­seller.”

In its mar­ket­ing, Opel chose to jump the As­tra over much larger lux­ury sedans to il­lus­trate how the As­tra is both lighter and of­ten bet­ter equipped. The As­tra of­fers su­perb con­nec­tiv­ity with state-of-the-art smart­phone in­te­gra­tion.

It also con­tin­ues the Opel tra­di­tion of mak­ing in­no­va­tive tech­nolo­gies and fea­tures from higher classes avail­able to a broad cus­tomer base, from adap­tive lights to the Opel Eye front cam­era that also sup­ports the car’s Lane Keep As­sist and Au­ton­o­mous Emer­gency Brak­ing.


Opel made no se­cret of what it thought of other Ger­man cars com­pared to the new As­tra.
