THE first phase of the Volkswagen Driver Search came to a head at Gerotek last week, with a flurry of activities culminating in the 16 candidates being cut down to the eight finalists who will return to the Pretoria vehicle performance testing facility for the next phase later in October.

The eight to go through are: Ayrton Good, Ebrahim Jood, Jerone Kelly, Jonathan Mogotsi, Rishay Moodley, Ryan Rhode, Shivesh Bissoon and Siyabonga Mankonkwana.

Volkswagen Motorsport and MSA also recognised Terry Khalo and Prince Ndiweni for their marked improvement and committed to assisting them with racing in the new year. Four drivers will be selected to go into a racetrack shoot out. That will narrow the field to two finalists, who will each race competitively in selected regional races. The driver who acquits himself best in those races, will then become a Volkswagen Motorsport Race Driver competing in the 2017 Engen Volkswagen Cup. — Wheels Reporter.
