ROME/GENEVA — Migr ants r es­cued from a r ub­ber bo at that l eft Lib ya l ast week said as many as 30 peopl e w ere tram­pled or dr owned dur­ing their v oy­age as this y ear’s Medit er­ranean de ath toll climbed t o mor e than 1 7 00, the UN said y es­ter­day.

They ar­riv ed in P oz­za­llo, Ital y, on Mon­day and said their bo at l ost it s mo­tor and t ook on w ater hour s af ter leav­ing Lib ya. Some f ell in the s ea and drowned and o thers w ere tr ampled dur­ing the p anic, in­clud­ing a small child, l eav­ing be tween 20 and 30 de ad. Two bodie s w ere r ecov­ered.
