Let’s Play! There’s still time to enter
THE Witness’ Let’s Play initiative, which is about to pick its fifth monthly winner, is a way of promoting healthy minds and bodies among young people.
The competition was launched jointly by The Witness and SuperSport in March to give recognition to Pietermaritzburg pupils at primary schools who excel in sport.
Teachers and sports coaches at local schools are encouraged to nominate sports achievers from their institutions each month.
The entry form is carried every Thursday in the newspaper.
The Let’s Play project is supported by the departments of Sport and Recreation and Education, and various sponsors.
Engaging in some sort of physical activity is essential for children’s development both physically and emotionally, considering that the Heart and Stroke Foundation says obesity in South African children is already sitting at unacceptable levels.
The competition runs until the end of November, following which an overall winner will be chosen and announced at a formal function in December, which will be broadcast on the Let’s Play programme on SuperSport.
Sports clubs in the Midlands, like karate, judo and swimming, may also nominate their rising stars, but have to send the nominations via the pupil’s school. The criteria used by the selection panel of The Witness for the monthly award includes the level of participation (local, regional, national or international), sportsmanship, continuous improvement over time, regular attendance of practice sessions and the enjoyment thereof, a high level of participation at sports meetings, assisting others — especially younger ones, and a happy attitude.
The Witness, together with SuperSport, encourages a healthy and active lifestyle among young people and the competition is for those who go the extra mile in the sports arena.
Each month’s winner is written about in the newspaper, with last month’s deserving winner, Abby Daugherty, expressing much gratitude for the feature article and prize she won — a Let’s Play hamper filled with goodies to the value of R700.
The monthly deadline for the submission of nominations is the 20th.
Once again, teachers, sports coaches at schools and clubs are urged to get their young sports stars acknowledged. So fill in the official entry form and submit it to email@example.com.
