The Witness - - NEWS - CHELSEA PIETERSE

A MAN died after he was hit by a taxi while crossing the road near Northway Mall early yesterday morning.

The man, Thembelihle resident Khanyiso Mabaso (55), had allegedly tried to cross the road when a taxi, travelling up Chota Motala toward Northdale Hospital, hit him.

ER24 advanced life support paramedic Andrew Rogers said the man was still breathing when emergency services arrived, however, his condition quickly deteriorated due to the severity of the injuries.

Rogers said the man had injuries to his head, face and legs and suffered a heart attack while paramedics attempt ed to stabilise him.

He said the team attempted to resuscitate Mabaso, but his injuries were too severe and he died at the scene.

He said emergency services noticed an increase in accidents involving pedestrians during winter due to the longer nights and shorter days, making it difficult for both drivers and pedestrians to see each other during morning and evening commutes.

He said the incidents usually occurred when people were on their way to work or on their way home in the evening.

Mountain Rise police spokesperson Captain Gay Ebrahim said a charge of culpable homicide had been opened against the driver.
