Shop owner survives shooting during robbery
A PIETERMARITZBURG businessman is lucky to be alive after he was shot four times by armed robbers in Slangspruit, near Imbali, on Wednesday.
Etemo Tekel (30) was “outside his shop around 10 am when three men approached and shot him,” said Pietermaritzburg police spokesperson Sergeant Mthokozisi Ngobese.
It is understood that Tekel had been fetching water outside. His friend, Melezo Mohammed, told
The Witness the robbers approached Tekel and demanded money.
“I received a call from one of the customers telling me that Etemo had been shot. The neighbours said the robbers came inside the yard and struck Etemo over the head using the butt of a gun before demanding the keys to gain entry inside the shop.”
On their way out the robbers shot his friend’s legs four times before fleeing the scene in a silver VW Polo TSI.
“We are not sure how everything unfolded because Etemo has not been able to tell us himself what happened. He went to surgery yesterday and is still unconscious in hospital.”
An eye witness who stays a few kilometres away from where the incident happened said she saw the three men speaking to Tekel.
“They looked like they were having an argument. I then saw them pinning him to the ground and two of them went inside the shop.”
Mohammed said the robbers ransacked the shop and took an undisclosed amount of cash and airtime vouchers. No arrest has been made yet.
