The Witness - - NEWS - — Witness Reporter.

THE Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs revealed yesterday there were calls for the department to increase their support to izinduna.

Recentlyappointed head of department Thando Tubane said there were calls for the department to provide other financial contributions and benefits, besides the salaries it already pays izinduna.

He said the “bad news” is that the costs associated with izinduna and amakhosi would increase.

“That will further put a strain on the already strained provincial government resources,” he said.

He said the department had canned several rural development programmes to foot the bill.

Tubane said the department still did not know where it would find the back pay for izinduna for which President Jacob Zuma signed the proclamation in 2013.

Tubane also revealed the costs related to last month’s deadly storm on the coast were over R2,2 billion.

He said this figure excluded the damage incurred by the private sector.
