United stars inspire local pupils in training clinic visit
MARITZBURG United paid a visit to Edendale Technical High School in Edendale yesterday to run a training clinic with the school’s soccer team and build excitement for their Absa Premiership derby with AmaZulu at Harry Gwala Stadium on Friday.
Team of Choice players Motsie Matema, Ziyaad Eksteen, Rushine de Reuck and Luyanda Ntshangase, led by assistant coach Siya Mdluli, interacted with the youngsters and put their playing skills to the test in an event featuring over 1 000 jubilant pupils.
The initiative was favourably received by the staff and pupils, with Grade 12 pupil Lwazi Nqange, who plays as a goalkeeper for the Edendale school’s soccer team, expressing huge excitement.
“It’s a really rare opportunity for us. We always watch them on TV, so to spend the day with them and ask for advice is really inspirational. This will motivate us to do well and, hopefully, get to their level one day,” he said.
Imbaliborn Ntshangase said the aim of the initiative was to show the club’s commitment to providing a platform for youngsters who wished to improve in the sport.
“I think it’s a good initiative by the club. For me, it’s close to my heart. I’m just glad that I can be part of this and inspire the youth,” he said.
“I hope the guys had fun because we did and, of course, that we’ve left a mark. We want to encourage them and motivate them.”
The excited pupils also received match tickets to Friday’s KZN derby, which kicks off at 8 pm.
