At face value, the obsession appears to be founded on its beauty, lustre, malleability, resistance to corrosion nor tarnish, moreover its scarcity. Gold is very scarce.
Ancient civilizations associated Gold with Gods, Deities, Royalty, and power all around. Ancient civilizations in Greece, Roman Empire among others conducted extensive mining operations for Gold in their areas of jurisdictions. Egyptians mined Gold as early as in the year 3,000 BC. Gold also played an important role in the Egyptian mythology as it was regarded in high esteem by all the Pharaohs, and temple priests alike.
The Holy Bible also embraces Gold as a precious metal an object. There are several verses in the Holy Bible that embrace this precious metal.
“… A river watering the garden flowed from Eden; from there it was separated into four headwaters.
The name of the first is Pishon; it winds through the entire land of
Havilah, where there is Gold.
The Gold of that land is good…”
As the book of Genesis deals mainly with the creation of the universe by
Lord God a conclusion that
Gold had been with the universe from the beginning of the universe is justifiable.
Israelites were also obsessed with Gold. This appears in the book of Exodus. When Moses did not appear to be helping the Israelites to achieve their goals, the Israelites decided to worship Gods. The Gods that they chose were made of Gold, thus …
“… When the people saw that Moses was so long in coming down from the mountain, they gathered around Aaron and said, “come, make us gods who will go before us. As for this fellow Moses who brought us up out of Egypt, we do not know what happened to him..,.” Aaron answered them, “Take off the gold earrings that your wives, your sons, and your daughters are wearing, and bring them to me.”…So all the people took off their earrings and brought them to Aaron. He took what they handed him and made it into an idol cast in the shape of a calf, fashioning it with a tool. Hey said, “These are your gods, Israel, who brought you up out of Egypt …”[ Exodus 32:1-4]
The book of Revelations also describes ‘The New Jerusalem’ thus ..The great street of the city was of Gold, as pure as transparent glass…”[ Revelation 21: 21] In our next feature, we will continue to explore the obsession with Gold by the nations of the world.
