Truly remarkable: Containing SA’S last remaining swamp forests, this 332 000ha park links up eight ecosystems and, with its three major lakes, is Africa’s largest estuarine system. It’s a coast-lover’s paradise (think 220km of beaches that extend to Kosi Bay on the Mozambican border), as well as the perfect park for game-viewing. If you’re looking for a rare experience, book a turtle tour between November and March. The region is the only surviving major nesting site for loggerhead and leatherback turtles. Once they’ve hatched on the beach at night, baby turtles make their way to the water – a perilous journey, with a myriad of predators waiting to nab them, including birds and ghost crabs. Only once they’ve reached the waves safely do their mothers return from the ocean to the spots where the eggs hatches. How they remember these remains a mystery. Visit:
