I’m well aware that heritage celebrations came and went with the month of September, but living in SA gives us reason to rejoice in our multi-faceted uniqueness – every day. The fact that we have 11 official languages is a reflection of our diversity as a nation, as well as validation that our inclusive Constitution is one of the most advanced in the world.
The potpourri of features in this issue, from coverage of new Toyota and Lexus models to influential people, attractive tourist destinations and top-notch restaurants, is in itself a celebration of the colourful life we live. One project really close to my heart is the 5 Continents Drive (5CD). Its main purpose is to enable engineers to get out from behind their desks and actually feel the road, experiencing first-hand the way vehicle performance is impacted by the wide variety of driving conditions around the world and gathering new insights. By connecting with customers in a meaningful way and listening to their feedback, Toyota can better understand their needs and usage patterns.
Before coming to our continent this year, the 5CD team had faced unrelenting dust and heat in the Australian leg in 2014, freezing cold and tortuous passes in the Americas in 2015 and 2016, and the urban highways of Europe last year. The African leg obviously lived up to expectations.
We trust that by the time the 5CD team leave the continent, they’ll have had time to admire its breathtaking beauty while traversing its vast landscapes. We know these drivers will not only be exposed to diverse terrains and contrasting climates, but will also discover heterogeneous cultures, as well as people whose passion for welcoming travellers is almost contagious. We also have two new vehicle models that we’re “super”-proud to introduce to you: the 2019 Toyota Supra and the Lexus ES, which each offer something different and exciting in their respective segments. The return of the Supra isn’t just the reincarnation of a legendary sports car, but is also proof that a lot more can be achieved through collaboration between manufacturers. The new Lexus ES, on the other hand, has set the bar high in terms of luxury and style. It’s available in both petrol and hybrid in the local market. Beautiful as the images of it are in these pages, they simply don’t do justice to the vehicle: take my advice and view it in the metal. Better still, take it for a spin. You’ll be amazed. Enjoy!
