VENTURE INTO THE UNKNOWN
Cities like Barcelona, Venice and Amsterdam are all suffering from “overtourism”, a global problem where too many travellers visit a particular destination and negatively impact the quality of life there.
Now more intrepid travellers are eschewing long queues at the Louvre or Sistine Chapel and are opting for more remote travel destinations. Countries like Bhutan, Paraguay and Oman have all seen an increase in tourist numbers in the past year. Tour organiser Intrepid Travel recently added tours to Djibouti and India’s remote north-eastern regions, while Hyatt Hotels and the Hilton Group are opening new properties in Kazakhstan.
