Re­search by di­eti­cian Jane Bad­ham shows that there’s no ev­i­dence that links bread with weight gain. “Bread comes in spe­cific dietary in­gre­di­ents: wheat-free, gluten-free, low GI and high-fi­bre, so claims that you’ll not lose weight if you in­dulge in bread aren’t true.

“South African food guide­lines rec­om­mend eat­ing a va­ri­ety of foods, in­clud­ing bread. It’s in­ex­pen­sive and when eaten with nu­tri­tious top­pings, can be a good source of carbs, pro­tein and fi­bre,” says Bad­ham. So go on and have a slice!
