Winter fashion can be so much fun. There are many layers to work with, allowing you to hide that extra bulge in elegant style. This issue is jam-packed with affordable wardrobe must-haves. Do check out the swoon-worthy feature that portrays classic leather as the hottest fabric to wear right now (page 60). We have borrowed-from-the-boys inspiration for days when your closet is not that inspiring, and the most Instagram-able items, including berets, micro sunnies and daytime metallics. You don’t have to be a fashion fundi to ace this season’s looks – two ordinary women (who are just like you and me) show us how to nail the layering trend in our ‘Who Wore It Best?’ feature (page 66). I did say this issue is jam-packed, right? We applaud modern black dads who are defying the stereotype of ‘absent fathers’. Reading through this feature on page 52, I realised that a father can still be absent, whether he’s in a relationship with the mother or not. The whole point of fatherhood is not only about providing children with the material stuff – it’s also about setting an example and stepping in to do things that are often considered the mother’s job. Being a dad means enriching a child’s life with positive experiences and wonderful memories. I had a sit-down with Bonang Matheba, aka Moghel, to discover what drives and keeps her going during the most testing of times. What I came out with were 31 lessons that she’d love you to know about building your personal brand, making career moves and love, of course. Judging by the outcome, I can safely say that the media darling is definitely on a quest to find her authentic self – a self that looks inward for inspiration and is solid enough to withstand challenges. Bonang is a force.

We feature other black women with inspiring stories – from Cordius Shelembe (page 56), who survived a near-fatal car accident and lived on to fight to get her life back (she now even heads up two successful companies!), to Dr Same Mdluli who curates the Standard Bank Art Gallery at just 33 years old (page 52).

To you, the valued reader, thank you so much for the continued support and for all the feedback. Let’s chat further: email me at editor@truelove.co.za. Happy Youth Month!
