Ed’s letter

True Love - - CONTENTS - @TrueloveMagazine TrueloveMag Mbali Soga Editor TrueloveMagazine

I’ve had a cold for almost three months now. I’ve been to the doctor and even self-medicated; it just refuses to go. After much introspection I’ve had to get real with myself. How can I expect to get better when I don’t look after myself ? I’m literally running around burning it at both ends at work, playing supermom (navigating homework, pick-ups and rugby matches), leaving no time for myself, not exercising or even sleeping enough. My body is literally saying: stop.

Pastor Pushie’s column (page 82) has scared some sense into me. Not honouring my body can lead to more serious illness in future. Something as simple as not sleeping enough can cause heart disease or even cancer (take the quiz on page 100 to assess your sleeping patterns). So, in tribute to all the amazing features in this month’s issue focusing on health, I vow to fit in more time for myself. This means exercising my “No!” muscle and working through the guilt of not being all things to everyone. On the plus side, this week I said “yes” to a lunch with women I’ve looked up to in my industry, who totally energised me and reminded me that I’m not alone. I’ve also slow-jogged, or rather power-walked, twice first thing in the morning, and I’m eating less meat. Let’s see how it pans out…

This issue is brimming with amazing ways to live a healthier life (mind, body and soul), including black women blazing a new trail in the agricultural industry (or agri-preneurs, as they are now known). The feature shows that, yes, women can make it in this male-dominated industry, but also that organic ingredients are available at affordable prices to add to your family’s daily meals. We’ve selected fashion and beauty products that not only look good, but are beneficial too. There are lip-smacking smoothie bowl recipes using fresh ingredients to give you a refreshing and nourishing boost in the morning.

Here’s to taking more walks, saying no to that extra glass of wine and getting more sleep!
