Isidingo Weekdays SABC3 19:00

It’s the end of an era as Isidingo bids farewell to not one, but two, of its best loved characters. Original cast members Agnes (Keketso semoko) and Zeb (don mlangeni nawa), who’ve been on The deep since 1998, head back to ma Agnes’s hometown on Tuesday 12 August. But it’ll take some doing to get Zeb to join her in her brave new venture…

With Zeb having been away in Ghana for the past month working on the sibeko mines, Agnes started considering a major life change. so on monday 4 August, she gave Zeb a call and stunned him with a surprising announcement: she wants to leave for Thaba ’nchu in the Free state and start a farming business. “she wants to go back to where she came from. she is longing for home,” Keketso says of her character’s exit from the soap. “she’s seen it all, she’s done it all and there’s nothing to live for in horizon deep anymore.”

With her mind made up, Agnes starts preparing for the big move, but Bra Zeb makes it painfully clear that he’s not fond of the idea. “he’s the traditionalist of the two and is very comfortable in his current situation, so the idea of having to uproot his life is big,” Keketso explains.

And so the battle to convince Zeb to join Agnes in her farming plan begins. But he’s not budging. “At first, Zebedee thinks this is just Agnes’s way of actually asking for a divorce,” Keketso says, adding that “it becomes such a big issue for them that it almost tears them apart”. By Friday 8 August, after a week of begging, Agnes faces the reality that she could be moving on without her husband. It’s a bitter pill to swallow, but this is what Agnes wants, with or without Zeb by her side. “It’s not a difficult decision for her,” Keketso admits. “But Zeb is also part of this decision and he’s making it difficult.”

As Agnes is packing her final things on Tuesday 12 August, it’s difficult to picture our veteran TV couple living separate lives. But after a final family dinner and a prayer, Agnes gets a pleasant surprise – Zeb agrees to go, but not immediately. “Yes, he does end up leaving with her,” an excited Keketso says. But with Zeb still needed on the mines, Agnes ends up leaving The deep on her own, waving her home and loved ones goodbye.

While fans are only seeing the matabane exit now, Keketso and don wrapped up filming in June already. “I’m taking a breather for a bit,” Keketso says. “I’m on vacation until next year to refresh and break away for a bit. I’ve been trapped in my character for so long that it’s necessary.” And if you’re hoping to see Keketso onscreen somewhere else, don’t! she’s adamant that she won’t be doing much work for the next six months.

The Isidingo team and cast are very secretive of the events surrounding Agnes and Zeb’s exit, but Keketso tells us that it’s not necessarily the end. “Well, they don’t kill them, so you never know. It’s up to production and the executives.” While Isidingo and Endemol refuse to comment on the decision to write out the horizon deep originals, headwriter Rohan dickson tells us that the possibility of their return is still on the cards. “They are important characters in the show, so there’s always a chance that they can return in the future.”

Zeb’s stubborn, but he loves Ma Aggie.
