Back to cause a bang
Former Generations actor Mike Mvelase is back on soapies as Loyiso, 7de Laan’s driven businessman.
7de Laan Weekdays SABC2 18:30
MTell us about Loyiso. he’s no fly-by-night guy. he is a family man and as a businessman, he’s driven by power – he worked hard to make it and won’t let anyone take that away. What’s kept you busy since you left Generations in 2012? i was a brand ambassador for ekhaya Foods until 2013 and i started my non-profit organisation enqolobaneni heritage & arts. it focuses on reviving the art of storytelling using theatre as a medium. and i’m writing a play of folktales called Kwasukasukela – or “Once upon a Time”. So how is set life on 7de Laan different? all sets are different, like at Generations you arrived two hours before your scene to rehearse and film. at 7de laan, everyone comes in early and they’re involved with the whole process. Was it difficult to get into that routine? no, i’m not one to be lazy in the morning. and the warm welcome makes things ike Mvelase has come a long way since his days as manservant Khapela ngcobo on Generations, the role he played from 2002 to 2012. but he’s returned to telly, in hillside as successful entrepreneur loyiso Masiya. so what can viewers expect? wonderful – they make you feel part of the family, that they care about you. it’s everyone for themselves at Generations. So which role do you prefer? loyiso – by a mile! he’s a man of his own ambitions, like me. he has a cold side, but he’s also smart and will fight for his family. Khapela was no businessman and he let emotion cloud his judgement. Would you ever return to Generations? no, i was there for 10 years and don’t believe in going backwards. i want to move forward and play intriguing characters. You’ve been outspoken about Generations’ storylines since 2012, specifically the Noluntu poisoning her mom and the Jason-Senzo same-sex marriage being “immoral”. Have current storylines improved? i don’t watch it at all. and yes, i lashed out in the past, but i’m not phased anymore about what happens at Generations. i’m strict about the content that my family watches. And besides acting, what are you passionate about? i want to be a youth mentor and i’d love to teach life lessons, like working with finances and about their options in life. i wish i had that when i was young.

Mike’s not too fond of his old role – more so because of having guns aimed at him.
