bad news

harles kunutu (masilo magoro) has become rich overnight and the budding entrepreneur knows what to spend his cash on. “he’s not revealing where he got the money from, but he’s determined to bring the maputlas down and make his the store of choice in town,” masilo explains. with his newly acquired nephew nimza (buhle maseko) having his own bone to pick with the maputlas, after finding out that their son kwaito (clement maosa) ran his dad down before he even had a chance to meet him in 2011, charles recruits the teen as his right-hand man at the store on monday 1 december. ma’kuntu (shoki sebotsane) isn’t keen on her stepson nimza playing shop assistant in her brother-in-law charles’s spaza shop, not only because he should be studying, but because she believes that charles’s hatred for the maputlas will fuel the boy’s pain of having his dad killed (it happened in the very first episode) by one of them. “ma’kunutu asked nimza not to work at the shop, but he disobeys her. he sees the bigger picture – toppling the maputlas – and thinks that she doesn’t,” buhle says.

nimza loves his uncle and their bond revolves around avenging ben’s death – which, as buhle points out, isn’t healthy. “they’re a dangerous combination, these two. nimza finds a mentor in charles, but their relationship is twisted.” when they go into business in order to topple the maputla empire, it’s bound to get risky.

the family that fights together…

charles is having none of ma’kunutu’s disruptive concerns and confronts her on wednesday 3 december about keeping his nephew away from what he likes to call the “family business”. “she bans nimza from working at the shop and charles accuses her of being jealous of him. he’s also bitter because ma’kunutu rejected him when he wanted to take over and be her new husband. i think deep down, charles resents her,” says masilo. but charles takes comfort in the fact that his nephew is on his side. masilo adds, “he adores nimza and knows how brainy nimza is. that’s why charles asks him to look after his new shop with him. he wants the kunutus to take over and believes that nimza can help him achieve it.” but will ma’kunutu ruin their plans?

(step)mommy dearest

while charles is starting small in taking on the giant maputla supermarket with a tiny spaza shop, he needs more than his teenage nephew’s support to achieve his business ideals. but he shouldn’t expect that from his sister-in-law. “she doesn’t believe that he can make it and that charles should stop competing with the maputlas,” masilo explains. but with his upcoming pool tournament having turfloop buzzing, maybe she’s wrong. only time will tell if charles’s investment is indeed an asset.
