we’ve seen her comedy skills as thando on my perfect family (2011-current) for the past three years and she got cosy onscreen playing josephine in mzansi love (2013-current) earlier this year. so it was only a matter of time before thando thabethe got dramatic. the first episode of kowethu (2014-current) saw the 24-year-old being beaten and showing impressive defence skills as she fled her abusive boyfriend. since then, thando’s shown that her character sazi is a fighter – all while thando continues to host shows on radio (sundays between 10:00 and 14:00 on 5fm) and tv (she is the host of dj talent search show 1’s and 2’s on sabc1) and she still has time to chase her dream to make it in hollywood. we’re impressed… how do you relate to your character sazi in kowethu? she’s lost because she keeps running away from everything in her life that goes wrong. it stems from her longing for love. you’ve shifted from comedy to drama – how’s that been? this is what i’ve wanted to do, so when the time came, i was ready. what’s your greatest passion in the industry? to entertain. except for singing. i will never go that route – i’m a terrible singer. back to acting – who would you like to share screen time with that you haven’t as yet? hlomla dandala and nthathi moshesh. i’d also add sdumo mtshali and pallance dladla to the list as i’m always keen on working with new talent, especially when they’re that good. so what’s your ultimate destination in the industry? to be an international film star. i’ve just wrapped shooting on my first feature film (golden highway – out in 2015), so i’m well on my way to achieving that. the press is often talking about you and your work. but how would you describe yourself? i’m young and ambitious, but most importantly, i’m fun.
thando thabethe is rocking our screens
with her talents.
