Coming out the closet
Will’s still struggling to come to terms with being gay, but then he’s blackmailed by evil eJ.

an will horton (chandler massey) become a new man as salem rings in its new year? his envy is obvious as he watches sonny (freddie smith) celebrate with his fellow out-and-proud friend tyler (andrew st john) on friday 23 january. but the secrecy surrounding will’s sexuality seems too smothering to escape. he’s only recently accepted it himself and getting people to accept that he’s gay will be an uphill battle, especially considering his recent romance with gabi (camila banus). “we want to be as realistic as possible, because coming to terms with who you are and your sexuality isn’t something that just happens overnight – it takes time,” explains chandler.
waiting with open arms
grandma marlena (deidre hall) has been waiting for him with an open mind and a loving heart for weeks. “she senses will’s discomfort and confusion and his stress. she wants to provide a safe place to talk. i think there’s a fantasy that everybody would like, when they’re considering coming out, to be in those kind of safe harbours,” reveals deidre. chandler adds, “he trusts her because she’s a psychiatrist and she’s not going to tell anyone else.”
will turns to sonny first though. still unaware of what’s at the heart of will’s struggle, sonny tells him on tuesday 27 january: “i think you should leave salem. sometimes you have to put a distance between everything you know and everyone you love before you can find yourself. i don’t think you’ve been comfortable in your own skin for a while.” the idea suits will, who also wants to get away from sami’s (alison sweeney) nonsense, but he takes a misstep.
will tries to blackmail ej (james scott) into giving him the cash to leave salem on friday 30 january, partly as revenge for ej having a fling with sami. ej swiftly turns the tables on monday 2 february. not only does he know that will shot him at ej and sami’s wedding in 2010 (2007 in the us) and let his dad lucas (bryan dattilo) go to jail, but like marlena, he’s also guessed that will is gay. chandler says, “it’s just like in real life. the people you’re really close to probably suspect and they know before that person’s ready to admit it.” but unlike marlena, ej isn’t in a supportive mood. “i hear that prison is not a very nice place. especially for a man of your particular disposition,” he gloats. “if you want to keep yourself out of jail, you’re going to do everything i ask.”
will’s stuck in salem and in silence, but you don’t tell sami’s son what to do and expect him to just take it.
