Late night news

TV Plus (South Africa) - - 21 JANUARY -

mention late night news (2010-current) and people take notice. the local current affairs show with a twist has been around since september 2010 and has impressively managed to snag two emmy nominations in 2013 and 2014. the show’s known for its no-holds-barred approach to politics and news, but is there anything the king of local comedy, loyiso gola, won’t joke about? we find out from the man himself.

do you sometimes go into a show thinking “perhaps i shouldn’t say this tonight”? sometimes. the production team and i have intense debates about what should make it onto the show. sometimes i win the argument, sometimes i don’t. there is a process: it takes about five days to make the show but as news changes constantly, changes to the show happen all the time. which do you prefer: tv or stage? i prefer the stage because it’s what i love more and it’s where i started. i’m a way better comedian than tv presenter. television still makes me nervous. on the stage, i’m totally comfortable and confident. so what are you like at home? i’m a bum. reading, soccer and being on the internet is what i do at home. i never let cameras into my house. that’s the only private place i have. what tv shows are you watching? i can watch soccer the whole time, quiz show qi with stephen fry (2003-current), mythbusters (2003-current) and louie (2010-current), which is on vuzu at the moment. how has the team handled cast member chester missing’s recent dramas? we support him. he’s fighting a good fight and it’s incredible how he’s constantly managed to voice a balanced opinion. is there anything that you won’t joke about? there is no line – if the joke is in good taste and funny, then it’s open game. jokes will offend someone – that’s just the nature of humour. a lot of the time, humour is at someone’s expense.

loyiso gola’s struck it rich with his satirical news show.
