jackson galaxy is an unusual-looking guy – he towers above most people at 1.95m tall, plus he’s bald and sports fancy sideburns, a goatee, glasses and pierced ears. he has an equally unusual job too: he’s a cat whisperer. the my cat from hell (2011current) star also has the knack of turning feral felines into purring furballs…
his real name is richard kirschner. he changed it to jackson galaxy when he was in his 20s. although the 48-year-old is a cat expert, he has a master of fine arts degree in acting. jackson’s been working with cats since 1997. his original “cat from hell” was benny, whom he describes as “three kilograms of feline frustration who i loved with all my heart”. his first book, cat daddy: what the world’s most incorrigible cat taught me about life, love and coming clean (2013), was based on what benny taught him about life and conquering his inner demons. last year, jackson released his second book, titled catification. and just what were those demons? alcohol, drugs and food, jackson says. “i grew up in a fat household.” he had gastric bypass surgery when he tipped the scales at 181kg. he’s also a musician and songwriter and says that “i’m a rock and roller and an r&b kind of guy”. jackson used to play guitar for the new york rock band pop of the circus gods but left the band in 2007 when he moved to la. jackson married long-time girlfriend minoo rahbar in june 2014. their dog mooshka was the ring bearer. their other dog rudy is a blind jack russell and the couple also have eight cats. jackson has more than 15 tattoos on his arms, mostly cats. his first was in 1989 and was a “tiny pink panther on my left arm”. he’s started with tattoos on his legs to one day have a “full tattoo suit”.
