maggie gyllenhaal’s just scooped the 2015 golden globe award for best lead actress in a mini-series for her role as nessa stein in the honourable woman (2014). says 37-year-old maggie: “there are kidnappings, sex and a whodunnit – all the elements that draw people in.”
maggie’s got a famous family – her dad stephen’s directed episodes of tv shows like army wives (2007-2013) the mentalist (2008-current) and blue bloods (2010-current), while her mom naomi is a screenwriter who wrote 1998 oscarnominated film running on empty. and her brother jake gyllenhaal (from 2005 movies jarhead and brokeback mountain) is also an actor. she married actor peter sarsgaard (ray seward in the killing, 20112014) in 2009. they have two daughters, ramona (8) and gloria ray (2). in 2013, maggie discovered that her real name isn’t maggie. the name on her birth certificate is margolit and she only uncovered this when she decided to take her husband’s last name. “i really love that name, but to me it’s not my name. maggie’s on everything from my driver’s licence to my passport,” she says. she’s done some modelling work, taking over from supermodel kate moss in 2007 as the face of lingerie brand agent provocateur. she’s also posed for campaigns for miu miu and reebok. maggie’s lost out on a few big film roles. she auditioned as rose in 1997 disaster epic titanic. kate winslet was cast, became world famous and got an oscar nomination. it happened again in 2000 when maggie auditioned for penny in almost famous. kate hudson got the role and the subsequent oscar nod. she’s obsessed with brit period drama downton abbey (2010current). “it’s like crack; i love watching english people doing old-fashioned things”. nb! see more on p38.
