best known for his role as kevin walker in drama series brothers & sisters (20062011), matthew rhys has tv fans talking for a different reason these days. playing russian spy phillip jennings in action series the americans (2013-current) has earned him a serious fan following and more…
matthew is best friends with fellow welsh actors ioan gruffudd (mr fantastic in the fantastic 4 movies (2005-current) and martin sheen (william masters in masters of sex, 2013-current) – they lived together for 10 years and matt was ioan’s best man at his 2007 wedding. his first experience in acting was playing elvis presley when he was at school and he was hooked – he applied to the royal academy of dramatic art in london and got a scholarship in 1993. his americans co-star keri russell (felicity, 1998-2002) is also his girlfriend – they’ve been dating since early 2014, a couple of months after keri split from her husband. like a number of actors, matthew gives his time to various charities and organisations, including spinal injury charity trust pa, the noah’s ark appeal (a children’s hospital fund in wales) and bobath children’s therapy centre wales, which helps children with cerebral palsy. acting’s not the 40-year-old’s only passion – in 2010 he produced the documentary mr hollywood (about welsh industrialist griffith j griffith). that same year, matthew wrote a photographic journal called patagonia: crossing the plain (about his month-long horseback ride through the south american region) and in 2011 he founded his production company patagonia. and while he loves acting, matthew admits to sometimes “catching myself going, ‘what am i doing? i’m 40 and running around in a wig pretending to be a spy!’ this isn’t a real job…”
