When Mampho’s (Itumeleng Bokaba) boyfriend Shakes (Zola Hashatsi) gets a Sparkle Awards nomination on Wednesday 2 September, she’s worried that she’ll lose him to the world and its loose women. “She’s excited for him as she played a helpful role in his career as a DJ, but she’s also worried about the attention that he’ll get from more girls now,” says Itumeleng. Meanwhile, Shakes is over the moon and oblivious to his girlfriend’s insecurities, which aren’t exactly unwarranted. “He’s gone from being a nobody in KZN to being a big deal on Joburg radio and he allows it to get the better of him,” says Zola. And while Mampho’s thinking that the best way to keep her man on a short leash is with sex, he’s way ahead of her and brings up “the S-word” before she can tell him she’s HIV-positive.
to Friday 4 September when it’s splashed all over the papers that Shakes is Jozi’s most eligible bachelor. “Her fears are confirmed and she wonders what she has that other girls don’t that’ll make Shakes stick around,” says Itumeleng. But before she can seduce him into loyalty, Mampho’s pleasantly surprised when he goes on air on Monday 7 September and professes his love for her, squashing the bachelor rumours. And judg-judging by Shakes’s behaviour on Tuesday 8 September, he’s expecting a thank you… “He gives hints in passing, like, ‘Let’s take this to my place,’ while they’re having drinks, even though he knows she’s a romantic, while he’s into the sex part of it,” says Zola. Armed with confidence, Mampho tells Shakes her status on Friday 11 September, but not in the most graceful way. Lucky for them both, an artist whom Shakes represents makes an appearance and whisks him off for a drink, leaving Mampho to fear the worst for her relationship. “She thinks that he’s going to disappear, but he returns and explains that he loves her anyway,” says Itumeleng. Meanwhile, Shakes’s head is spinning. “He wants to break up with her but he feels sorry for her,” says Zola. “He’s thinking, ‘I can have any chick I want. Why would I want to be tied down to someone with HIV?’”
Unaware of Shakes’s mindset, Mampho plans an overnight stay and on Thursday 17 September, they finally have sex. But you’ll never believe why Shakes does it. “He doesn’t want her to ask questions and think that he’s leaving her because of her HIV status,” says Zola. “It’s just to shut her up and do her a favour.” Ouch!
