Cliff Curtis is trying to survive Fear The Walking Dead’s (2015- current) zombie apocalypse, but he’s also terrified of anything scary. And we mean anything! The New Zealandborn actor, who’s of Maori descent, has made a Hollywood career playing everyone from an FBI agent in Body Of Proof (2011-2013) in 2011, to evil Fire Lord Ozai in 2010 fantasy film The Last Airbender. But Cliff’s never done horror… and that’s because he hates gore. Which makes his role as Travis in The Walking Dead’s (2010- current) prequel series pretty hard to figure out. Turns out Cliff’s solution is simple: run from the zombies.
Tell us more about Travis. I love that he believes in the goodness of humanity. I do too, so in many ways I align with my character. Perhaps Travis isn’t best suited for this new world and perhaps he isn’t going to make it. Perhaps he doesn’t have a place in the future… My greatest fear isn’t that I’m going to be killed by some infected something or other. My greatest fear is that my humanity will die and that my sense of value will die, my family will no longer be important because my fear will overcome itself. So what attracted you to the show? For me it was reading the pilot and seeing the humanity. The creators were talking about committing to a show that’s really about a family, not monsters. It felt authentic, genuine and real. These people aren’t just cardboard cut-out characters; they’re human beings. The Walking Dead has a huge fanbase. How did the people in your life react when they heard the news? I had family and friends screaming and yelling. They treat it more like a religion than an entertainment show and insisted that I do this show. My kids are very excited that I’ve finally “made it” [Laughs]. Did you watch Walking Dead before being cast? I’m squeamish. I get scared of things that are scary. I was told, “You don’t need to watch anything because there’s the comic book… and there’s the show and such a frantic kind of
