Less than a week after admitting her feelings for ex-fiancé Zola (Mutodi Neshehe) at a Narcotics Anonymous meeting, Karabo (Connie Ferguson) decides to do something about the situation on Thursday 17 September. It isn’t that out of the ordinary for the exes-turned-best friends to spend time alone together, chatting about life, love and business. But when Karabo gets Zola alone this time, she tries to kiss him – and she almost immediately regrets her actions. “Zola rejects her advances,” reveals Connie. “He was deeply hurt by Karabo using cocaine again and he’s moved on with Scarlet (Lerato Moloi). He doesn’t want to go there with Karabo again.” But this doesn’t mean that he’s not feeling the spark or wondering what it would be like to actually go ahead and do it. “Zola’s shocked at first because he was not expecting that from Karabo,” says Mutodi. “He was doing what any friend would do, at least in his mind.”

THE GOOD GUY

“Zola is ethical and has a high standard of morals,” says Mutodi of his character’s actions. “He’s in a new relationship with Scarlet and he knows the difference between right and wrong.” Which Karabo, who’s married to businessman Tau, (Rapulana Seiphemo) seemingly doesn’t. “Naturally she’s hurt in the moment, but going forward she decides to put on her big girl panties and accept it for what it is,” says Connie. “She felt something in the moment and he just didn’t.”

But there’s more to it than that. Zola still being upset with Karabo for her drug relapse earlier this month is contributing to his current behaviour towards her. “To Zola, this is the same old thing. She messes up and wants her ‘Superman’ to come and rescue her. He wants her to grow up. She cannot be doing the same thing they did 30 years ago. There’s too much at stake now,” he says. “Family, kids, multi-million rand companies and hundreds of employees and clients are all reliant on them to do the right thing.”

Most affected by Karabo’s reckless actions would be Tau, who notices Zola’s mood changing towards him when the two men see each other on Friday 18 September. “It actually dawns on Zola that his ex-fiancée wasn’t just acting from a drug-fuelled state of mind,” says Mutodi. “Karabo really wants to be with him and Tau was a mistake. So Zola starts looking at Tau as the reason for Karabo’s unhappiness.”

AT ARM’S LENGTH

The question now being asked is: what is Zola going to do about Karabo and how she’s feeling towards her marriage? Also, what’s going to happen to his new
