Whoopi Goldberg is throwing her considerable Hollywood know-how behind Strut, a new reality show about transgender models trying to pursue their dreams and become household names. Whoopi, who’s still a panellist on talkshow The View (1997-current) is one the show’s executive producers. Whoopi Goldberg’s coming back to TV… sort of.

Undead-themed cop show iZombie (2015-current, see more on p9 and 47) has been trying for two years to get Aly Michalka’s sassy lawyer character Peyton Charles onboard as a full-time cast member. They’ve finally worked out a deal and we’ll be seeing a lot more of Aly when season 3 starts later this year.

Calling all Mad Men (20072015) fans – you can now own a piece of the show. To celebrate the one-year anniversary of the popular period drama’s series finale, over 1 500 props and trinkets are being auctioned off at ScreenBid.com. The bidding opened 1 June and closes 13 June and items for sale include Don’s (John Hamm) wallet and secretary Peggy’s (Elisabeth Moss) typewriter.

The Biggest Loser USA (2004current) is being sued. A number of former contestants on the weightloss-themed reality show, led by season 2’s Suzanne Mendonca, are claiming some serious wrong-doing from producers. The allegations say producers denied contestants water, forced them to over-exercise, plus encouraged them to take drugs and lie about how much weight they’d lost.

A spot of good news: we’ll be seeing a lot more of some popular reality shows like The Voice USA (2011-current), Forged In Fire (2015-current), Counting Cars (2012-current) and MasterChef Junior USA (2013-current). Also renewed are fantasy series Sleepy Hollow (2013-current) for season 4, hospital drama Code Black (2015-current) for season 2, sitcoms Last Man Standing (2011-current), Family Guy (1999-current) and The Odd Couple (2015-current), for seasons 6, 15 and 3 respectively, while Jimmy Kimmel’s talkshow Jimmy Kimmel Live! (2003-current) will stay on air until at least 2019. Jimmy Kimmel’s talkshow is here to stay. Not everyone loved The Good Wife’s (2009-2016) recent slaphappy series finale, but there’s good news for fans of the legal drama. It’s getting a spin-off to air in 2017 that will centre on Christine Baranski (Diane) and Cush Jumbo (Lucca). It will air exclusively in the US on CBS’s new Netflix-like streaming service CBS All Access. No word yet on whether we’ll see it on SA screens.

The Bold & The Beautiful (1987current, see more on p28) is also being sued – for a cheesy remark. In a scene that aired in the US last year, Charlie (Dick Christie) berates himself for choosing one brand of Italian cheese over another, which now has the dairy company cheesed off. They’re arguing that Bold’s massive worldwide popularity means that the comment has dented the company’s good reputation.

If you missed our extensive list of recently cancelled shows on the tvplus Facebook page (Facebook.com/tvplus), there’s a lot to mourn. Cop shows Rush Hour (2016) and The Mysteries Of Laura (2014-2016), dramedies House Of Lies (2012-2016) and Faking It (2014-2016) and Animal Planet’s reality show Ice Lake Rebels (2014-2015) won’t see new seasons. Meanwhile, fantasy series Second Chance (2016) and Damien (2016), dramas Recovery Road (2015-2016) and Heartbeat (2016), sitcom Telenovela (2015- 2016, see more on p37 and 61), and crime thriller Game Of Silence (2016) have all been axed.

It’s also not looking good for the proposed TV series adaptations of the Cruel Intentions (1999) movie and popular detective novel series Nancy Drew – pilot episodes were filmed but the US networks bankrolling them decided not to move forward despite A-lister Sarah Michelle Gellar signing on to reprise her Cruel Intentions role of Kathryn. However, NBC is keeping their options open on Cruel Intentions, saying it might be revived again if they have space in their schedules next year.

Katherine Heigl is returning to TV again! The former Grey’s Anatomy (2005-current) and State Of Affairs (2014-2015) actress has signed on to play the lead in Doubt, a drama about a successful defence lawyer who falls for a charming client… who might be guilty of murder. The rest of the cast includes Steven Pasquale (Sean from Rescue Me, 2004-2011), Laverne Cox (Sophia from Orange Is The New Black, 2013current), Dulé Hill (Gus from Psych, 2006-2014) and Elliott Gould (Ezra from Ray Donovan, 2013-current).

Katherine Heigl is getting a new show called Doubt.
