Problems in Protea paradise
Pam’s rocky marriage could be over before it’s even begun.
Are S’khaleni and Pam already heading for divorce court? Weekdays Mzansi Magic (*161) 20:30
Pam and S’khaleni (Lorraine Mphephi and Zakhele Mabasa) have been hitched for two weeks and living together is already driving them apart. Taxi driver S’khaleni’s wild spending catches up with him on Wednesday 22 June just as his wife reaches breaking point. She detests their one-bedroom house in Protea and she is tempted to return to her upper- class life in KZN.
NOT SO PEACHY
What’s really irking Pam is that her hubby made her move to dusty Protea, Lorraine explains. “She misses comfort. She misses her own space. She feels cramped in the one-bedroom house – there’s no lounge or dining room… it’s all in one.” She adds that “the worst thing is sharing a bathroom with all the taxi drivers”. Pampered Pam is used to “the mansion lifestyle” and she tries to force S’khaleni to find a better home for them on Wednesday 22 June. But he’s not budging.
FOR BETTER OR WORSE
Pam explodes on Friday 24 June as it’s clear to her that her comfort isn’t a priority for her husband. “S’khaleni messes around too much and doesn’t realise how difficult he makes things for her,” says Lorraine. Pam reaches out to the mother figure in her life for help and advice later on Friday 24 June: taxi boss Iris (Mampho Brescia). “Iris is like a mom to Pam and assures her that ‘everything will be okay’, she must just hang in there,” says Lorraine. After that phonecall to Iris, Pam realises that leaving her problematic husband isn’t going to make her situation any better, so she tries to make the best of a bad situation.
HAPPY WIFE, HAPPY LIFE
There is some light at the end of the tunnel – Wednesday 29 June sees S’khaleni try to patch things up with his wife by handing over cash for Pam to do with whatever she wants. But according to Lorraine, it’s going to take a bit more than some banknotes, because while “Pam likes it when S’khaleni spoils her, what she really craves is being independent and making her own money”. So does the actress have any insight into what will happen to her character’s marriage? Lorraine hints that, “with S’khaleni, anything is possible… good or bad…”
