To play heart surgeon Alex Panttiere in now-cancelled medical drama series Heartbeat (2016), Melissa George sat in on a 72-year-old Frenchman’s heart op. “I watched the whole thing,” says the 39-year-old. “It was eight hours and the whole time I was thinking how hungry I was.” And Melissa’s humour is something that she shares with her character, who “loves cracking her patients’ chests open like a lobster”.

Speaking of seafood, Melissa was 1

born in Perth, Australia (where lobsters are exported from globally) and like many other Aussie stars, she got her start on Australian soapie Home And Away (1988-current) as chip-shop owner Angel Parrish from 1993 to 1996.

After moving to LA in 1996, Mel 2

was cast in action fantasy movie Dark City (1998) as a character named May and in 1999 drama film The Limey, playing Jenny, the daughter of a British ex-convict. The Limey is also where she met Chilean filmmaker Claudio Dabed, the director of 2006 romcom Ugly Me.

They married in 2000 but Melissa 3

and Claudio divorced in early 2011 after she was spotted kissing music and fashion mogul Russell Simmons. Melissa and Russell broke up halfway through the year and a bitter Russell tweeted “Long-distance relationships are, to say the least, difficult”.

Melissa’s since settled down with 4

French movie producer Jean-David Blanc – they have sons Raphael (2) and Solal (1) and live in Calabasas, LA.

She loves rollerskating and was 5

a national champion in the early ’90s. Apart from rollerskating, she’s a formally trained dancer in jazz, ballet and tap-dance, thanks to studying the styles since the age of seven.
