How does Grace’s life go down the drain? I like to describe her life as a “beautiful mess” because we see this smart, educated woman who takes drugs to numb her emotional and physical pain. She reaches out for help but everything just falls to pieces. How did you prepare for your role? My family is involved in facilitating drug rehabilitations. I did a lot of research online and offline, plus I watched an actual intervention. Also, preparing for the role meant I needed to dig deep and find my vulnerable place. And your kids are involved with the show too. Yes, my little boy Jesse (19 months) plays Grace’s son Sam and my eldest son Jamie (5) is in episode 6 (15 August) as Noah. Grace sees Noah being kidnapped and she’s determined to find him. So are the rest of the cast “like family”? I was telling Brandon Auret (Leon du Plessis in Isidingo from 1998 to 2005) who plays [drug addict] Charles that this is the happiest cast and crew I’ve been around. It really is like being with fam-ily and everyone is so supportive and excited to be here. What do you hope for the show’s future? We want to tell audiences that addiction isn’t a choice, it’s a disease. And you don’t need to get to rock bottom for help. We’d love to do a season 2 but that all depends on ratings.
