Season 2 M-Net Edge (*102) 20:00
Mankind’s fate is still up in the air when time-travelling sci-fi show 12 Monkeys (2015-current) returns for season 2. Season 1, based on the 1995 movie of the same name, dealt with time traveller James Cole (Aaron Stanford), his friend Ramse (Kirk Acevedo) and virologist Dr Cassandra Railly (Amanda Schull) trying to stop looney Jennifer Goines (Emily Hampshire) and the Army Of The 12 Monkeys from releasing a deadly virus that would kill billions.
Season 2 has new threats and while episodes 1 and 2 (29 August and 5 September) mostly wrap up the virus storyline, it lingers in the background while the new danger is time itself. “We find out how time and humans may work together,” explains series creator Terry Matalas. “But there is someone against time. The death of time is much bigger than an apocalyptic virus.”
Enter The Messengers, created by the Army Of The 12 Monkeys to kill off Primaries, people who’re connected to time. The Messengers travel back in time to kill Primaries because if all the Primaries are dead, so is time. This will bring about the Red Forest (a place where time and death cease to exist) and The Witness, the faceless leader of the Army Of The 12 Monkeys, wants to live there forever with his followers. The Witness’s identity is revealed in episode 13 (5 December) and it’s a shocker!
Helping James and his team are the Hyenas, Jennifer’s army from the year 2016, and The Daughters, Jennifer’s band of misfit warrior women in 2044. Also, a Primary known as Lillian, played by Madeleine Stowe (Victoria in drama show Revenge, 2011-2015), who was Dr Kathryn Railly in the 12 Monkeys movie, shows up to give James an ominous warning in episode 13.
