Season 1 M-Net Edge (*102) 21:05 Comedy
What do you call the woman with the perfect husband, white picket fence home and a successful business? On dramedy Divorce (2016-current), she’s called Diane (Molly Shannon) and her world’s about to be turned on its head thanks to her divorcing bestie Frances (Sarah Jessica Parker).
Unlike Diane, 52-year-old Molly 1
didn’t have an easy start. When she was four, her 34-year-old teacher mom Mary died in a car crash with her three-year-old sister Katie and 25-yearold cousin. “My mother was killed and my dad James survived. My sister Mary and I survived,” says Molly.
But she used that as inspiration for 2
her work, especially in comedy for her time on sketch comedy show Saturday Night Live (1975-current) from 1995 to 2010. “I know creative things often come out of the most vulnerable parts of our past,” she explains. “It gives the viewers so much joy and laughter. Comedy was always such a relief to me.”
Molly married artist Fritz Chestnut 3
in 2004 and they recently moved to LA after living in New York for nine years with their daughter Stella (13) and son Nolan (11).
Inspired by her kids, Molly wrote 4
children’s book Tilly The Trickster in 2011. “My dad pulled pranks and I’ve passed that to my kids. My son put an ice cube under my pillow,” she laughs.
Molly has one strict rule: weekends 5
are family time and not for work. And when the kids get into bed, Molly loves binge-watching reality show The Real Housewives Of Orange County (2006-current) with a bowl of cereal.
Singer and friend Sheryl Crowe 6
cast Molly in her 1997 video for A Change Would Do You Good. NB! See more on p38.
