As the ex-Mrs George Clooney (they divorced in 1993, four years after their Las Vegas elopement during which they were married by an Elvis impersonator), Talia Balsam has loads of personal experience for tackling her new role in comedy series Divorce (2016-current). She’s playing Frances’s (Sarah Jessica Parker) best friend, divorced mom Dallas.
George admits, “I probably – no, 1
definitely – wasn’t someone who should’ve been married at that point. I just don’t feel like I gave Talia a fair shot.” But unlike Divorce’s Robert (Thomas Haden Church), Talia claims that George handled their divorce with grace. “George is charming. He remains charming. I’ve worked with him.”
The 57-year-old has been married 2
to John Slatterly, who played her character Mona’s husband Roger Sterling in period drama Mad Men (20072015), since 1998. “I’m married, very happily married now,” she beams.
The New York native and John 3
married on the Hawaiian island of Kauai in 1998 and have one child, 17-year-old son Harry.
Being the less famous person in 4
her relationships is a familiar feeling, dating back to childhood. Talia still has her father Martin’s Best Supporting Actor Oscar, which he won for his role in movie A Thousand Clowns (1965).
Her mom Joyce Van Patten played 5
substance-abusing mom-in-law Maureen Slattery in the sitcom Unhappily Ever After (1995-1996).
Talia adds that growing up in an 6
acting family has been helpful to her professionally. “I knew early what I wanted to do. I had the benefit of watching good people show me what it really is to be an actor – the day-in and day-out of it,” she explains.
