Still dazed and confused

tvplus readers and soapie fans are still fuming about Days Of Our Lives’ even-later late-night timeslot.

TV Plus (South Africa) - - YOU ASK -

While we’re still waiting for official comment from the SABC on why Days (1965- current) gets only one midnight screening while Bold & Beautiful (1987- current) has two repeat timeslots, there is a huge factor in the SABC’s decision to air the long-running soapie so late: its ratings are much lower than Bold’s.While many think that Days is the more popular, the perception might have something to do with the fact that Days has been running for much longer than Bold, or the recent outcry when SABC dropped Days in July, only to bring it back to SABC3 in August but after 23:00.

As of September 2016, Bold is SABC3’s top-rated show, with around 1.1 million viewers, just above Isidingo (1998- current). By contrast, in September, which was a few months after SABC’s controversial 90% local content quotas kicked in, none of the new shows like Real Talk With Anele (2016- current) or Real Housewives Of Jozi (2016- current) had made it into the channel’s Top 20. Before Days was dropped, it was bringing in around what High Rollers (2013- current) has now – 646 000. But since it’s not local, it airs later.

If the SABC can repeat Bold & Beautiful, why can they not repeat Days Of Our Lives? Are they aware of the fact that Days is more popular than Bold? – RONALD, VIA EMAIL

John, Marlena and the Days cast have only one slot on SABC3’s schedule.
