Mark-Paul Gosselaar’s come a long way since playing fresh-faced high school charmer Zack in comedy series Saved By The Bell (1989-1993). He is bearded and broody these days as baseball team captain and catcher Mike Lawson in sport drama Pitch (2016-current). “I got the breakdown – a woman makes it in major league baseball – and I thought, ‘Eh, this is too gimmicky.’ But then I read the script and I think I offered them my firstborn to get the job, I loved it that much!” he says.
1 And he’s been dedicated to his 1
butch role since day 1. The 42-yearold put on 10kg in muscle working out in the gym and training with pro baseball teams until 9pm five days a week.
2 Not that rough sports are new to
him. “I used to race motocross and that was a dirty secret that I couldn’t tell the producers of Saved By The Bell… for insurance purposes. I was racing as an amateur for about 10 years,” he says.
3 This isn’t the first time that Mark’s
gone all out to get into character. For Saved By The Bell, he dyed his hair blond. “My mother is from Indonesia, so my hair is naturally black. They wanted Zack to be blond… so yeah, I dyed my hair for all of those years,” he says.
4 Mark married talent co-ordinator
Lisa Ann Russell in Hawaii in 1996 after meeting on set. They have son Michael Charles (12) and daughter Ava Lorenn (10) but divorced in 2011. Lisa married Jeff Probst (the host of reality show Survivor, 2000-current) the following year.
5 Mark got hitched that year too
– he has son Dekker Edward (3) and daughter Lachlyn Hope (1) with his second wife Catriona McGinn.
