I could get to do that in my work was brilliant. They let me do it – the fights, abseiling, climbing… they strapped me into a helicopter and flew me up and I was dangling out!”
While the series is set across the world, from Egypt and Moscow, to Cambodia and The Caribbean, it’s actually shot a lot closer to home for SA audiences. Episode 1 starts off with Hooten trying to steal treasure from a tribe in the Amazon, which is where he bumps into Lady Alex who is searching for a long-lost explorer. The episode was filmed in KwaZuluNatal and Michael says that “it was amazing. In the three weeks we were there, our snake guy caught 42 snakes!” For episode 3 (27 December), the Namibian desert was used for Egypt’s dunes, while The Caribbean in episode 8 (31 January 2017) was mostly shot in Cape Town. Keep an eye out in episode 2 (20 December) for when Hooten hits on Alex’s mom at a wedding – Lady Lindo-Parker is played by Jane Seymour (Dr Quinn in Dr Quinn, Medicine Woman, 1993-1998).
Hooten and Lady Alexa land in a number of tight spots.
