The Amazing Race SONY 19:35 Season 1 e.tv (*194) 19:30 Comedy
The Johnsons in sitcom Black-ish (2014current) are a typical suburban family. They’re leading happy, healthy lives and finding their feet in a crazy world, led by dad Andre Sr (Anthony Anderson) and mom Rainbow (Tracee Ellis Ross). But behind the scenes, there’s a lot of not-so-typical stuff going on, like …
Tracee’s real life growing up was 1
anything but typical and suburban – she’s the daughter of iconic singer Diana Ross, most famous for her 1965 hit song Stop! In The Name Of Love.
And Tracee isn’t the only one with 2
music in the family – Jenifer Lewis (Andre’s mom Ruby) sang back-up for Bette Midler in 1983 and 1984. She even mentions it in character when Ruby tells Rainbow, “I lived in New York and performed with Divine Miss B” – (season 2 episode 23, May 2016).
While Grandma Ruby is Andre’s 3
mom on the show, 59-year-old Jenifer is only 13 years older than Anthony. Likewise, Laurence Fishburne, who plays Andre’s dad Pops, is only nine years older than 46-year-old Anthony.
Black-ish isn’t the first time that 4
Jenifer and Laurence have worked together. In 1993, she played his mother-in-law Zelma Bullock in the comedy movie What’s Love Got To Do With It.
While Black-ish is all about love 5
and family, Tracee didn’t get along with Anthony before filming started as she thought he was “just another arrogant comedian”. She jokes now that “I hated him. Anthony has a heart of gold but it’s covered in shards of glass”.
And although Tracee learns her 6
lines by heart, that hasn’t stopped her from stashing scripts all over the set. “Oh they’re everywhere,” she says. “In the kitchen drawers, in the fridge, in the closet… just in case I need a refresh.”
