The Bold figure

Understanding how viewership figures are calculated for soaps like Bold & Beautiful can be confusing.

TV Plus (South Africa) - - YOUASK -

Hi tvplus. In the magazine of 9 November, you mentioned Bold having 1.1 million viewers. Where did you get the 1.1 million figure? No one has been house-to-house asking viewers for their input, have they? – PENSIONER, VIA SMS The viewership figures come from the TAMS (Television Audience Measurement System) report that’s published by the Broadcast Research Council (BRC), a body completely independent of the SABC. To conduct their research, the BRC installs TV-use tracking devices (very similar to your electricity or water meter) in thousands of homes across South Africa’s various age, race, gender and income groups. The data from those meters is multiplied proportionately to represent what South Africa is watching. It would be impossible to knock on every door to find out what every single South African is watching, not to mention expensive, which is why these maths equations and tracking units are used. For a far more accurate and detailed explanation of how this system works, visit www.brcsa.org.za.

Are you one of the 1.1 million South Africans watching Bold daily?
