Season 1 Comedy Central (*122) 21:00 & 21:25 Comedy
We adore a show that reveals how joyfully bizarre our true friendships are. In Broad City (2014-current), we meet New York City best friends Ilana Wexlerand and Abbi Abrams (played by real-life besties Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson, who’re also the show creators). Nothing about their lives is spectacular – not their numerous lovers, their multiple jobs, their bodies or their clothes. But who cares when you have a friend who’ll laugh at the gross, embarrassing, humiliating, hysterical facts of life with you? Broad City is, according to Abbi, “A place where every little thing is a struggle but it’s full of hope and joy and fun and that’s the motivation for everything that goes on.”
From the way that Abbi and Ilana talk to one another to the nitty gritty of their lives, it all feels incredibly real. In fact, the show draws on reality to the extent that Abbi and Ilana’s clothes onscreen are mostly rejects from the actresses’ old wardrobes. “We know them so well. When we come up with stuff, we talk about our own lives and then heighten those situations. For instance, Ilana’s job [in the show], the company she works at is based on this company called Life Booker where we both (and actually one of our directors) worked. So we heightened both the company and how we felt there,” says Abbi. Ilana adds that “the two characters are very much past versions of ourselves. When we take real detail, the height to where we take it is where we find our brand of absurdity. It’s funny that it’s relatable after it’s been blown out of proportion.”
