Many fans were up in arms when Billy (Jason Thompson) made over Kay Chancellor’s (Jeanne Cooper) classic mansion into his man-cave in December 2016 (on SA screens). Even the cast was put out. In March 2016, when US audiences saw the makeover for the first time, Judith Chapman (Gloria) ranted her Facebook page, calling the Billy remodel “the demise of Katherine Chancellor’s mansion from a timeless vision of elegance, taste, love and knock-down, drag-out fun and drama to a grey, lifeless, colourless institution, a hotel, airport bland bar”. Yes, the Chancellor mansion currently has the same colours as Y&R’s prison set, but that’s about to change!
JILL TO THE RESCUE
Billy’s mom Jill (Jess Walton) nicknamed the new interior “a bordello for depressives” in February this year when she saw what Billy had done with the half of the Chancellor estate that she inherited. On Tuesday 21 March, Jill revealed that she’s giving the mansion another facelift and we’ll see the results on Tuesday 25 April. Behind the scenes, Y&R’s new executive producer Mal Young is Jill’s partner in crime and he says that “as with the best stories, they’re the ones written by the character, because we sat in a meeting and went, ‘Jill would hate this house!’ And we were picturing, ‘Well, there’s the story. She makes him change it. It will be hilarious but it will be real.’ It coincided with the fan outcry, but we just allowed the fictional character of Jill to make that decision for us, funnily enough.” NB! See more on p30. The lively, warm old version.
The drab, new-look mansion.
