The 99th precinct has more than 99 problems…
Brooklyn Nine-Nine Season 4 Thursdays (from 4 May) Vuzu AMP (*103) 20:00
The cops at Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s (2013- current) precinct might be rude, crude and hopelessly out of their depth most of the time, but at least they try to uphold the law. “But their flaws make them more relatable,” says exec producer Dan Goor ahead of season 4. “We’re picking up [from season 3] and that’s with serial killer Figgis (Eric Roberts) in search of Detective Jake Peralta and Captain Holt (Andy Samberg and Andre Braugher), who’re in Florida in the Witness Protection Program.” That’s not the only action happening at the precinct this time round…
1 Jake and fellow detective Amy (Melissa Fumero) move in together in episode 3 (18 May). But as Dan says, “It’s awkward after not seeing each other for six months because Jake was in Witness Protection and that might cause tension as they try get used to each other again.”
2 Super-tough detective Rosa and her equally crazy agent lover Adrian (Stephanie Beatriz and Jason Mantzoukas) announce their engagement in episode 6 (8 June) and the rest of the cop-shop offer to pitch in. And that’s never a good thing!
3 Awkward detective Charles (Joe Lo Truglio) is now a father to his adopted Latvian son Nikolaj (Antonio Raul Corbo) with his girlfriend Genevieve (Mary Lynn Rajskub). And what could be more awkward that an oblivious Charles getting involved with a Latvian crime syndicate in episode 10 (6 July) while trying to find Nikolaj “the perfect Christmas gift”?
4 There is some real crime-fighting and in episodes 11 and 12 (13 and 20 July), the precinct hunts a criminal gang. Dan adds that “what the writers have gotten good at is introducing elements into the stories that make them comedic in spite of – or in addition to – the stakes”.
5 Thanks to an auditing glitch in episode 13 (27 July), the 99th Precinct could be shut down. Somehow, the detectives find a way to save their jobs and still keep the city of Brooklyn safe at night.
