Isibaya: your say
Fans share their likes and dislikes about the popular soapie.
Isibaya (2013- current) has been going strong since day 1 and has built an audience of 1.2 million viewers (according to the March 2017 TAMS). While we asked the popular soapie to provide us with a sneak preview for June and July 2017, they were unable to due to tight production schedules. So we asked viewers to tell us what you’d like to see (or not see) onscreen…
Sbu and Thandeka (Sdumo Mtshali and Nomzamo Mbatha) had a rocky romance throughout 2016 and early 2017 but viewers are hoping they stay together the second-time round. “What I like is the fact that Sbu and Thandeka are back together. I also like that Qondi and Duma show love too, it’s not just guns and witchcraft…” – Ncenga Legodi via Facebook
Meanwhile, another fan wants the other Zungu wives to become more involved in the main storylines. “I’d like to see a love affair with one of the Zungu wives. Like Bhekumuzi and Zungu’s second wife or even Qondi and one of Sbu’s friends will make a great couple ” – Thandazani Jiyani via Facebook Others think that it could use a few characters representing the LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans) community. “Make Qaphela and Zweli a gay couple so that, for once we have a gay prince!” – Ayanda via Twitter
But not all viewers are happy with the current storylines and would like a few things to change on the soapie… “Isibaya has become predictable. The Zungus are always victorious and it’s always their enemies’ children who betray their fathers for the Zungus. Sbu betrayed Samson, Zweli betrayed Bhekifa, Zama betrayed Judas. It would be nice to see the Zungus lose power, for once” – Joy Mmolawa via Facebook
While some characters left, like Bhekifa (Vusi Kunene, who returned to Generations – see p19 – when his character died in a 2016 bomb attack), new faces have been welcomed like Lillian (Linda Sebezo – see p13), who’s become an instant after she joined in April 2017. “This is marvellous that [Greed & Desire’s Sharon D] is now on Isibaya” – Vodloza Mahoba via Twitter
But one character who’s a miss with fans is zombie- creating witchdoctor Sunday (Zakhele Msibi)… “Sunday Nkabinde must just end”
– Nomvula Msibi Dhludhlu via Facebook
