Living it Lategan
There’s a new family moving in and making waves in The Deep.
Middle- class Isidingo newcomers the Lategans become the talk of the town from Wednesday 10 May when newly elected mine hostel supervisor Hendrik (Gérard Rudolf) comes into focus. His position at the newly merged Sibeko Gold and Haines International company gives his family an inch of power and they’re grabbing what they can with both hands. But like everyone else in The Deep, the Afrikaans family are going to find their dirty laundry waving on the clothes line for all to see.
Occupation: hostel supervisor Background: his late dad Johan (who viewers will never see) was a boilermaker in Horizon Deep and Hendrik’s moved his family from Rustenburg to follow in Johan’s footsteps. The father of two is a traditionalist and believes that men should be the providers while women are meant to stay at home and take care of the children. Personality: Hendrik is loyal, dedicated and looks out for those who can’t fend for themselves. However, he’s stubborn, thinks that he always knows best and he hates people changing his routine. Scandal: an internal family feud is brewing for Hendrik. His teenage daughter Anja (Lee Visagie) is rebelling and his son Zandre (Deandre Reiners) refuses to work in the “low class” mining industry after he matriculates. Hendrik is also disappointed that his wife Lalage (Elma Postma) wants to go back to work.
Occupation: housewife… for now. Background: Lalage’s mom Heidi (who we don’t see) is a town-hopping, serialdating alcoholic who settled in Horizon Deep in the ’90s, which makes this a homecoming for Lalage who was the town seamstress growing up. Personality: while Lalage is loyal and a traditionalist like her hubby, they have differing views on life. She considers self-image and family image of the utmost importance and Lalage believes that being poor is an ungodly sin. Scandal: she admires strong-willed businesswomen like The Deep’s Nikiwe and Kgothalo (Linda Sokhulu and Katlego Danke) and she desperately wants her daughter Anja to look up to them as role models. But seeing who the teen chooses to hang out with is going to anger Lalage a lot.
Occupation: matric student Background: Anja’s grown up in a strict Christian family but that hasn’t stopped her from being a misfit, like hanging out with the wrong crowd. She also struggled through school and failed a year or two. Personality: like any teen, Anja is stubborn and naïve but her addictive personality gets her in trouble – she likes drinking and shoplifting and will be testing her limits. Also, spending time with the likes of Lerato and Kamo (Tema Sebopedi and Makgotso M) isn’t going to impress her parents. Scandal: this will be Anja’s last year of school, even if that means dropping out. Plus, she’s got her eye on a couple of young studs, regardless if they’re eligible bachelors or not.
Occupation: matric student Background: Zandre isn’t opinionated like his older sister, but that doesn’t mean he agrees with his controlling parents’ personalities and methods. He’s also in matric, like Anja, but he wants to study at The University Of Cape Town and leave The Deep. Personality: he’s short-tempered but not as rebellious as Anja. And he likes staying home to paint and practice his other art skills, which Hendrik and Lalage don’t approve of. Scandal: Zandre’s biggest fear is losing hope, not being able to better himself and ending up like his dad – stuck in a small mining town.
Meet the Lategans: dad Hendrik and mom Lalage, daughter Anja and son Zandre.
