Season 1 Vuzu AMP (*103) 21:30 Action
Single-season Training Day (2017) takes place 15 years after the movie it’s based on (2001’s Training Day with Denzel Washington as shifty cop Alonzo Harris and Ethan Hawke as rookie Jake Hoyt) and it’s just as grimy and full of illegal twists and turns. While it was cancelled in March after lead Bill Paxton passed away, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t watch the 13 episodes. There’s action, drama, gunplay and most importantly, there are two characters driving the line between right and wrong.
LAPD cop Kyle Craig (Justin Cornwell) goes undercover to investigate the Special Investigation Section, which is led by dodgy detective Frank Roarke (Bill). Frank’s methods aren’t what the department likes to call “standard procedure” and they tell Kyle to find out just how shady his new partner is. “This follows the same corrupt cop lines as the movie but it’s a departure,” Bill said while filming last year (season 1 had wrapped by December 2016). “This has corruption, nihilism and cynicism, but it is a moral story that could have some hope.”
Kyle’s job won’t be easy – Frank’s got a team loyal to him that includes… Detective Lee (Katrina Law, Nyssa al Ghul in sci-fi series Arrow, 2014-current) was saved from human traffickers as a child by Frank and there’s nothing she won’t do for him. Detective Campbell (Drew Van Acker, Remi Delatour in dramedy Devious Maids, 2013-2016) is an ex surf pro who bends the rules. And Hollywood brothel boss Holly (Julie Benz, Rita in slasher drama Dexter, 2006-2013) who Frank has an “arrangement” with.
Training Day the film… …and Training Day the series.
